Pitt Undergrad Program to Train More Teachers—Faster

Teacher shortages are hitting record levels in states across the nation, and Pennsylvania is not immune. Enrollment in the commonwealth’s education-related programs fell by two-thirds relative to just a decade ago and new certifications statewide have dipped to record lows

Enter the University of Pittsburgh’s new program designed to train more teachers—and faster.

The University is launching its Bachelor of Science in Teacher Education program in fall 2023. Offered by the School of Education, the program creates a pathway for Pitt undergraduates to earn a Pennsylvania teaching certification immediately after graduation instead of heading to graduate school.

The new major features six high-need academic tracks — special education (for grades pre-K through 12) plus mathematics, social studies, science, foreign languages, and English (all for grades 7 to 12). The program’s curriculum aligns with the Pennsylvania Department of Education certification standards, which means Pitt students are able to start teaching earlier—and fill the state’s talent gap faster.

Pitt’s School of Education awards more than 400 degrees and certificates annually. Nearly 90% of these graduates pass the certification requirements set by Pennsylvania Department of Education and 97% report being employed after graduation.
